Jordan Montgomery has criticized his former agent Scott Boras for his disastrous free agency at the end of last season.
The Diamondbacks lefty was reportedly interested in g with the pitching-starved Red Sox over the winter, but instead signed a one-year, $25 million deal before Opening Day to head to Arizona.
“I had a Zoom call with the Red Sox, that’s all I really know. It went well.” Montgomery said, according to the Boston Herald:“I don’t know, obviously Boras messed it up a little bit, so I’m just trying to move on in the postseason and forget about it.”
A few weeks after g with the Diamondbacks, Montgomery parted ways with Boras and moved to Wasserman, a rival baseball agency.
Montgomery was one of four Boras clients — along with Blake Snell, Matt Chapman and Cody Bellinger — who signed late in the season.
He was expected to build on one of his best seasons in 2023, posting a 3.20 ERA in 32 games during the regular season before dominating the postseason (2.90 ERA, 31 innings) for the World Series-winning Rangers.
The 2024 season was a miserable one in the desert for the 31-year-old lefty.
Montgomery had a 6.44 ERA in 19 games, prompting the Diamondbacks to move him to the relief bullpen on Friday to give right-handed pitcher Ryan Nelson a spot in the starting lineup.
He also didn’t make his debut until April 19 after missing spring training and a month with knee inflammation.
Montgomery has a $22.5 million vesting option.
If he makes four more starts, bringing his total to 23 starts, he will earn $25 million.
