The Latest Apple TV 4K Version Available to consumers for about a week, and we continue to learn more about Apple’s changes and improvements with this year’s review. The new Apple TV 4K is powered by the A15 Bionic chip, a new in-depth device test from Flats HD An interesting look at how this compares to game consoles like Playstation 4 and Playstation 5.
Apple TV 4K Performance Test
The A15 chip used in this year’s Apple TV 4K has a quad-core GPU, rather than the five-core GPU version that was used in the iPhone 13 Pro. It also has a quad-core U instead of a 5-core U, which again makes it clear that it’s a “packaged” version of the A15 Bionic chip used in other hardware.
In of performance compared to the previous generation Apple TV with the A12 chip inside, the tests were conducted by Flats HD Show that this year’s Apple TV 4K is “about 40% faster”. Apple s that it should be 50% faster, but this difference may simply be due to differences in testing methodology.
Another change this year is that the latest Apple TV 4K doesn’t have a fan inside, resulting in a smaller and lighter design. How does this affect performance, cooling and throttling? The new Apple TV 4K is already throttling less From the previous model:
In a benchmark U test, the A15 was about 40% faster than the A12 in the previous Apple TV — less than Apple’s 50% improvement that might use a different testing methodology. On the other hand, we were surprised to see the A15 throttle lower than the A12 given that it doesn’t have active cooling. The U speed of 20 minutes was slashed to 65% while the A15 was slashed to just 84%, which means the new Apple TV 4K can maintain most of the U performance during heavy loads for extended periods of time in gaming.
In of comparisons to game consoles like PS5 and Xbox One:
The U of the A15 Bionic is much faster than the previous generation game consoles like Xbox One and PlayStation 5. The U performance cores of the A15 are also much faster than the U (single-core performance) of the PS5 but the PS5 is ahead in performance Basic because it has 8 cores versus 5 cores in the Apple TV version of the A15.
As for the GPU, the Apple TV 4K (2022) on paper exceeds 1 TFlops of graphic performance but what’s a bit unclear as there’s no GPU info or benchmarking apps available for tvOS. In of performance of TFlops, it still can’t match the latest generation gaming hardware like the Xbox One and only has half the amount of RAM (4GB vs 8GB).
On the other hand, Apple TV 4K (2022) has much faster RAM and is equipped with a very fast NVMe SSD as opposed to the old HDD on last generation consoles. We’re starting to get to a point where Xbox One and PS4 games should, in theory, be playable on Apple TV without too many compromises.
For years, Apple has tried to turn the Apple TV into a gaming device but without much success. These tests confirm that the problem is not performance but rather a lack of broader from developers and game studios. These tests show that little has changed in this department, but the performance of the available games is still impressive.
